What Should The Pool Filter Pressure Gauge Read
Typically, a clean, functioning pool filter pressure gauge should read between 10 and 25 PSI (pounds per square inch). However, the most accurate “standard reading” is not a fixed value, but depends on the “reference pressure (Baseline Pressure)” of your specific system.
I recommend that you record the first reading after thoroughly cleaning the filter (backwashing or cleaning the filter element) as your benchmark value.
If the pressure reading is within 5 to 10 PSI above the reference value, it means that the filter has become dirty and needs to be backflushed or manually cleaned immediately.
If the reading is lower than the baseline value or more than 30 PSI, it usually indicates that the system has a serious suction end blockage or serious fouling of the filter medium, which must be dealt with in time to prevent the pump from being damaged or the filtering effect is reduced.
How To Find The “Bottom Number” Of Your Pool?
The pipe length, pump power and equipment distance of each swimming pool are different, so there is no uniform standard. To find out the “normal value” of your system, you must record it in the cleanest state of the equipment:
Thorough cleaning: the backwash is backwash (for sand tank or DE filter), and the flushing filter element is directly flushed with water pipe.
Clean up debris: Clean up the skimmer and the debris basket in the pump to ensure that there is no obstruction to the water flow.
Start the system: turn on the water pump to run for a few minutes, and wait for the pointer of the pressure gauge to stabilize.
Record the value: This number that is stable is your “initial base”. I recommend that you draw a bar on the dial directly with an oil pen, or write it in a conspicuous place.

When Should I Wash The Filter?
Once there is a base, the pressure gauge is no longer just a decoration, but a diagnostic tool.
5-10 PSI: The filter will intercept dirt, algae and grease when working. As the garbage accumulates, the water flow is blocked and the pressure inside the tank rises. When the reading is 5 to 10 pounds higher than the initial value, the cycle efficiency is already very low and the water quality will soon deteriorate.
Danger Zone (over 30 PSI): If the pointer reaches 30 or higher, this is a red alert. High pressures can cause a significant load on the canister, clamps, and piping. To put it more seriously, I saw that the lid of the filter tank collapsed directly due to excessive pressure, which was very dangerous. See this reading, immediately turn off the pump, to check whether the return valve is not open or where the serious blockage.
What Is The Pressure Too Low (Close To 0) Meaning?
There is a misunderstanding to mention: many people think that the lower the pressure, the better, thinking that the filter is particularly clean. In fact, if the pressure falls close to 0, it usually means that the water pressure root has not entered the filter tank:
The suction end is blocked: the skimmer or pump basket is full of leaves, the water cannot flow through, and the pressure cannot naturally rise.
Leakage: If air enters the system (usually the O-ring of the water pump cover is aging), the pressure will also drop.
The watch is broken: it is normal for this small accessory to be exposed to the sun and wind for a long time. If the pointer does not move when the water pump is switched on and off, replace it with a new one.

Typical Range Of Different Filters
Although the base number is king, if you have to have a reference interval, here is the average level I usually observe:
Sand Filter: Usually around 10-15 PSI. This stuff is solid, but it has to be backflushed frequently.
Paper core filter (Cartridge filter): approximately 8-15 PSI. Some large capacity filter initial pressure may be lower.
Diatomaceous earth filter (DE Filter): generally 10-20 PSI. It has the highest filtration accuracy, so as more tiny impurities are trapped, the pressure rises faster than other types.
